Men’s Skincare Routine for Oily Skin
Table of Contents
Why Do Men Have Oilier Skin?
Before I get into the routine, let me quickly explain why this happens.
Men naturally produce more sebum than women because of higher testosterone levels. Add genetics, stress, diet, and living in a hot and humid climate and your skin just goes into overdrive.
The good news is that managing it doesn’t have to be complicated. You just need the right steps done consistently.
Best Men’s Skincare Routine for Oily Skin (morning and night routine )
My Morning Routine :
Step 1: Cleanser
This is where everything starts. I use a gel-based face wash that cleans out the oil without making my skin feel tight or stripped.
Look for ingredients like salicylic acid if you have blackheads, or gentle surfactants if your skin is on the sensitive side. Avoid anything too harsh it’ll just make your skin produce more oil to compensate.
Step 2: Serum (Optional but Worth It)
If you want to take your routine a step further, add a serum. I use one with niacinamide it genuinely helps control how much oil my skin produces throughout the day. Salicylic acid serums are great if you’re also dealing with acne.
Step 3: Moisturizer
I know what you’re thinking “Why would I moisturize oily skin?”
I thought the same thing. But when you skip moisturizer, your skin gets dehydrated and actually produces more oil to make up for it. I use a lightweight, oil-free gel moisturizer and it made a huge difference in balancing my skin.
Step 4: Sunscreen
Non-negotiable. I don’t skip this even on cloudy days.
UV damage makes oiliness and acne worse over time. I use a lightweight, mattifying sunscreen modern ones don’t feel greasy at all once you find the right one.
My Night Routine :
Cleansing
At night I double cleanse, especially after wearing sunscreen all day. First an oil-based cleanser to break everything down, then my regular face wash. It sounds like a lot but it takes maybe 3 minutes.
Exfoliation (2–3 Times a Week)
I exfoliate a few times a week not every day. Over-exfoliating damaged my skin barrier once and it took weeks to recover.
I prefer chemical exfoliants like BHAs over physical scrubs. They go inside the pore and clean it out rather than just scrubbing the surface.
Night Treatment
This is when I apply any targeted treatments. Niacinamide at night works great for oil control. If you’re dealing with acne, this is also when you’d apply a salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide treatment.
Night Moisturizer
Yes, even at night. A light, non-comedogenic moisturizer helps repair your skin barrier while you sleep. Your skin does most of its healing overnight so don’t skip this.
Case study : ( My Personal Experience )
What Has Happened When I followed this products and routine for 4 weeks
- Reduced oil level : Because the exact and correct products , appropriate practice avoids dryness, which typically causes increased oil production, your skin will probably feel balanced rather than too oily.
- Less breakouts : Regular use of ingredients like niacinamide and salicylic acid helps cleanse pores and lessen acne.
- Perfect skin barrier : By preventing over-drying, using mild, non-comedogenic products fortifies the skin’s natural barrier.
- Increase skin glow : Regular use of the products , mild cleaning minimises pore size , reduce tanning and dullness.

I have been recommending skin care products to my sibling based on their skin problem like moisturizer or cleanser that has worked for them very well and they have overcome the sin problem
Summer vs Winter My Routine Changes
In summer I cleanse more carefully, switch to an even lighter moisturizer, and reapply sunscreen during the day if I’m outdoors.
Summer Skincare Tips for Oily Acne-Prone Skin
In winter my skin actually feels less oily but I still moisturize. Indoor heating dries your skin out and can trigger more oil production if you’re not careful.
Common Mistakes I Used to Make
- Used multiple products : I started using different products due to which my skin started to get more worsen
- Washing my face too many times a day : it strips your skin and makes things worse
- Skipping moisturizer : backfired every single time
- Using hot water : stimulates oil glands, always use lukewarm water
- Scrubbing too hard : damaged my skin barrier, not worth it
- Expecting results in a week : skin takes 4 to 6 weeks to adjust to a new routine

Beginner? Start Here
If this feels overwhelming, just start with three steps:
When I started skin care I also follow this same routine after some times minimum 4 weeks I used to add more products
Morning: Face wash → Moisturizer → Sunscreen
Night: Face wash → Moisturizer
That’s it. Once you’re consistent with the basics, you can slowly add toner, serums, and exfoliation.
Products I Look for (Ingredient Guide)
| Product | Good Ingredients | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Face Wash | Salicylic acid, tea tree oil | Harsh sulfates, heavy oils |
| Toner | Niacinamide, witch hazel, zinc | Alcohol, artificial fragrance |
| Serum | Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid | Heavy silicones, mineral oil |
| Moisturizer | Glycerin, ceramides, hyaluronic acid | Coconut oil, butter-based formulas |
| Sunscreen | Zinc oxide, titanium dioxide | Greasy, heavy formulas |
When Should You See a Dermatologist?
If you’ve been consistent for 6–8 weeks and still dealing with painful cystic acne, sudden changes in your skin, or signs of infection — go see a dermatologist. There’s no shame in it. Sometimes your skin needs more than an OTC routine can offer.
FAQs :
How many times should I wash my face having oily skin?
Everybody says to wash twice a day I also followed the same but some times while playing and sports or staying most of the time out doors Thrice a day
Can I skip moisturizer if my skin already feels greasy?
No — this was my biggest mistake for a long time. When you skip moisturizer, your skin gets dehydrated and compensates by producing more oil.
Does drinking water help with oily skin?
It might helps but it’s not a complete solution on its own. Staying hydrated keeps your skin from getting dehydrated, which can reduce excess oil production. I drink at least 8 glasses a day and combine it with a proper skincare routine for best results.
How long does it take to see results with a new skincare routine?
Give it at least 4–6 weeks. Your skin takes time to adjust to new products and the cell turnover cycle is around 28 days. I know it’s frustrating but don’t switch products every week — consistency is everything.
Is sunscreen really necessary for oily skin?
100% yes. I used to skip it thinking it would make my face greasier — but UV damage actually worsens oiliness and acne over time
Final Thoughts
Managing oily skin as a man is honestly not that hard once you know what you’re doing. The biggest shift for me was stopping the aggressive approach no more harsh scrubs, no more skipping moisturizer, no more washing my face five times a day.
Be consistent, be patient, and give your routine at least 4–6 weeks before judging results. Your skin will balance out.
