A personal review of the cleansers I’ve tested, loved, and sometimes hated.
Table of Contents
1. Introduction
I have oily skin. Like, really oily skin.
By noon, my face looks like I’ve run a marathon. My T-zone is a disaster. And don’t even get me started on foundation sliding off by 2 PM.
I’ve tried a LOT of cleansers over the years. Some were too harsh. Some left my skin feeling tight and dry. A few actually made things worse.
But some? Some genuinely changed my skin.
So I put together this list — 10 facial cleansers I’ve personally tested for oily skin. I’ll tell you what I liked, what I didn’t, and who each one is best for.
The 7th one is my favourite cleanser
No fluff. No paid reviews. Just real talk.
2. What to Look for in a Cleanser for Oily Skin
Before I get into the reviews, let me quickly cover what actually matters.
Ingredients that help: Salicylic acid gets deep into pores and clears out excess oil. Niacinamide controls sebum production over time. Benzoyl peroxide is great if you’re dealing with acne too. Kaolin or bentonite clay draws out oil without stripping your skin. Glycolic acid gently exfoliates and keeps pores clean.
Ingredients to avoid: Stay away from heavy oils like coconut or mineral oil. High concentrations of alcohol strip your skin and actually trigger more oil production. Pore-clogging silicones are a no too.
Best cleanser types for oily skin: Gel cleansers are my personal go-to. They cut through oil without over-drying. Foaming cleansers work well too, but some can be too aggressive. Cream cleansers? I’d skip those entirely for oily skin.
3. How I Tested These
I used each cleanser for at least 3 to 4 weeks before forming an opinion.
I paid attention to how my skin felt right after washing — tight, balanced, or still greasy? How long the oil control actually lasted. Whether it helped or worsened any breakouts. The texture and scent. And of course, price vs. results.
I have combination-oily skin with occasional hormonal breakouts. Keep that in mind as you read.
4. The 10 Best Cleansers for Oily Skin
1. Derma co oil free cleanser : good Overall

Quick verdict : My current using cleanser. Does everything it promises.
This one has been in my routine for 3 months now. I picked it up after seeing it recommended everywhere, and honestly the hype is real.
It contains Glycolic acid and hyaluronic acid , which work together to keep oil in check without destroying your skin barrier.
After washing, my skin feels clean but not stripped. That balance is really hard to find and this one nails it.
What I loved : it is fragrance free and dermatologically tested
What I didn’t love : The only thing i didn’t liked is pump the last remaining cleanser remains at the bottom only we have to open it manually
Best for: oily to combination skin
Price: In India : ₹ 215
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
2. Simple purifying gel face wash : Best Budget Pick

Quick verdict : Surprisingly good for the price.
This product is not on hype as much as the other cleansers are so
I wasn’t expecting much from this one honestly. But it proved me wrong.
It uses witch hazel which controls excess sebum and for something this affordable, the results are genuinely impressive.
My skin didn’t feel squeaky or tight after using it. And the oil control lasted through most of my morning.
What I loved: it doesn’t has any harsh chemicals and colors
What I didn’t love: Due to its new formulation it has stop working for some people

3. Cerave : Best for Acne-Prone Skin (favourite one)
Quick verdict: If you’re dealing with breakouts on top of oily skin, this one is for you.
Oily and acne-prone skin is a tough combo. Most cleansers either help the oil or the acne — rarely both.
This one does both. It has Vitamin B3 and pro vitamin B5 which targets breakouts and keeps excess sebum in check.
I noticed fewer clogged pores within the first two weeks.
What I loved: It is non comedogenic that won’t clog pores and it effectively removes the impurities from the skin. It is my best and favourite among these Cleansers
What I didn’t love: There is nothing that I didn’t loved about this product
Best for: Oily and acne-prone skin
Price: ₹ 1400 || $19
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
4. Cetaphil cleanser : Best for Sensitive Oily Skin
Quick verdict: Gentle enough for sensitive skin but still keeps oil in check.
Sensitive oily skin is a real thing. And it’s frustrating most oil-control cleansers are way too harsh.
This one is different. It’s fragrance-free, uses Glycerin , Niacinamide , and Panthenol. to soothe and controls shine. No redness. No irritation.
If your skin reacts easily but you still need oil control, this is worth trying.
What I loved: It Maintains the pH balance and controls the oil from the skin
What I didn’t love: It is ineffective when my sister used it while wearing heavy make up it didn’t work well or it didn’t cleared the make up in one wash
Best for: Sensitive and oily skin
Price: ₹1029
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
5. Derma touch Best Gel Cleanser

It glides on smooth, lathers just enough, and rinses off cleanly. No residue. No tight feeling.
[Key Ingredient] does the heavy lifting here and the results show.

6. Himalayan purifying neem face wash : Drugstore Pick
Quick verdict: You don’t need to spend big to get good results.
Walk into any drugstore and you’ll find this one. It’s been around forever and there’s a reason for that.

What I loved: It usually cleanse the face and make it smooth
What I didn’t love: Doesn’t give much result

Price: ₹ 299
Rating: ⭐⭐
5. How to Use a Facial Cleanser the Right Way
Even the best cleanser won’t work if you’re using it wrong. Here’s what I’ve learned.
Morning vs. night: In the morning, I keep it quick and gentle. A light gel cleanser is enough to remove overnight oil. At night, I go more thoroughly. If I’ve worn sunscreen or makeup, I double cleanse — an oil cleanser first, then my regular one.
Common mistakes I used to make: Washing more than twice a day strips your skin and triggers more oil — counterproductive. Hot water damages your skin barrier, lukewarm is much better. Skipping moisturiser after cleansing is a big one oily skin still needs hydration. And being too rough while massaging does more harm than good.
6. FAQs
Can I use a cleanser twice a day if I have oily skin?
Yes, morning and night is the sweet spot. More than that and you risk drying your skin out which ironically makes it produce even more oil.
Will a cleanser help with my acne?
It can help, especially if it contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. But a cleanser alone isn’t a full acne treatment. Think of it as one part of a bigger routine.
Are natural cleansers good for oily skin?
Some are, some aren’t. The key is the formulation not whether it’s labelled natural. Always check the ingredient list regardless.
What’s the difference between gel and foam cleansers?
Gel cleansers tend to be gentler and work great for daily use. Foaming cleansers give that squeaky-clean feeling but can be more stripping. I usually recommend gel for daily use and foam for when your skin feels extra congested.
7. My Final Verdict
If I had to pick just one, I’d go with [Product Name] every single time.
It hits everything I care about oil control, how my skin feels after, clean ingredients, and a fair price.
But everyone’s skin is different. If you’re acne-prone, go with [Product Name]. On a tight budget? [Product Name] is your best friend.
